Wall Street Raider -- the ultimate in sophisticated financial simulations, a corporate takeover and stock market game and simulation, in which you strive to build your corporate empire by fair means or foul, all the while trying to stay one step ahead of the SEC, IRS, Justice Department, EPA, Congress, powerful unions and no end of ruthless competitors and dealing with difficult ethical choices -- not to mention various manmade and natural economic and other disasters. In this highly realistic simulation, 1 to 5 players (including the computer) compete to amass fortunes, investing in, or taking over and managing, any of up to 1590 companies in 70 industry groups. Once in control of a company, you'll use all the tricks of the trade of real Wall Street corporate raiders to expand your empire and net worth, including hostile takeovers, greenmail, LBOs, IPOs, junk bond financing, mergers, restructurings, dominating your industry, antitrust and other lawsuits to harass competitors, or dealing in put and call options. All in the quest for the Almighty Dollar (or Yen, Pound, Euro, or other currency you configure it for). All your investment research and financial wheeling and dealing occur against the backdrop of a nonstop 'live' stock ticker tape, scrolling financial news tape, and a constantly shifting economic and political environment in which all the companies and industries in Wall Street Raider must operate and try to cope. Speedy decision-making is of the essence, and sweaty palms are a certainty, as you try to cope and keep your company's earnings on an upward track -- or at least keep yourself out of Bankruptcy Court! .... Reviews: In a front page article (6/22/2000) Investor's Business Daily called it an '...imaginative, stimulating...' simulation. A leading computer columnist wrote of it, 'You can really learn something about stocks, mergers, takeovers and the general world of finance, and have a whacking good time in the bargain.'Features:
More companies. Up to 1590 at any one time, vs. 250 in the DOS version.
More industries. 70, vs. 36 in the DOS version.
More money. You start out with an amount you choose, between $100 million and $1 billion U.S. dollars (or the equivalent in any of 20 other currencies, if you choose to configure the game for a country and currency other than U.S.).
More scenarios. Lots more, and all kinds of new economic news alerts, disasters, market bubbles and the like.
Startups. You can start up new companies in any industry, including banks or insurance (if you have enough capital to put in), and then leverage your financial power by taking that company public in an IPO, issuing new stock to the public (and in private placements) to raise a lot more money for the company, but keeping enough of its stock to retain control.
Control of a company is still 20% voting control. However, you can own 5% in Company XYZ directly, and 15% of XYZ through another company you control, for example, and have control of Company XYZ that way. You may even be able to maintain control for a while without owning any of the stock of a company, if you set up interlocking companies that control each other, and you controlled the whole group at one point. (But that will only last until the next shareholder meeting....)
Players. The maximum number of players has been increased from 4 to 5 in the Windows version.
Corporate bond trading. Players, and financial institutions can now invest in corporate junk (or investment grade) bonds issued by any of the 1590 companies that have bonds outstanding, and can thus play the bond market, as well as the stock market.
Enhanced database searches. The task of searching for stocks or corporate bonds that might be good investments, among the 1590 companies in the simulation, has been made much easier, with a greatly enhanced database search function, using up to 11 different factors you can configure to find companies whose stock or bonds you want to invest in.
Earnings reports on demand. Now you can call up the most recent quarterly earnings report for a company at any time, not just when it is released by the company.
Point and click on companies. The new version, as a Windows-based program, lets you select companies or industries from lists, whenever a list of companies or industries is displayed, and you can even click on a company name in a financial profile (such as the profiled companys bank, or main stockholder company) to select the other company for viewing. (But you can still enter a companys stock symbol, if you know it, or look it up from an alpabetical list of all companies, and click on it, if you dont know it, to select a company for viewing or for action.)
Economic and industry forecasts, tax projections. Version 2.0 (and later) of W$R now includes handy textual analyses of the economic situation plus the outlook for each industry at the moment, displayed in a text area in new pop-up menus, and also includes a tax estimate and projection for the player, so you will now know how much cash to set aside for year-end income taxes.
Add-on features. If you order the full package, you also get the Customizer Utility program, and the electronic (HTML) book, Wall Street Raider -- The Book, both of which, when installed, are accessible with a single click from the W$R Options Menu on the main W$R menu screen.
Other improvements. Plus hundreds of other minor enhancements and additions, which you will notice many of, if youve played both versions, as the new version is far more realistic and sophisticated than the old DOS version.
